Yew Chung International School, Hong Kong
A Grade 6 Learning Community that transforms a constrained, single floor in dense urban Hong Kong into an open, flexible, student-centered learning environment.
An agile Learning Community, making the most of every square meter.

Reimagining a constrained urban floor as a flexible Learning Community.
The Yew Chung International School Hong Kong Grade 6 Learning Community reimagined a highly constrained, space-limited floor within an existing urban campus as a flexible, student-centered learning ecosystem rooted in Yew Chung’s bilingual and inquiry-driven philosophy. Set within one of the world’s densest urban environments, the project explored how agile educational planning could transform a restrictive floor plate into a dynamic, future-ready environment that makes the most of every square meter. Rather than relying on traditional classrooms and fixed partitions, the design strategically removed key walls to create an open, interconnected Learning Community able to support many teaching and learning modalities at once.
Flexible furnishings, mobile storage, adaptable layouts, and multipurpose zones let the same spaces transform through the day — supporting direct instruction, project-based learning, independent study, peer collaboration, spontaneous learning, performance, arts integration, and technology-enhanced teaching. The educational framework centers on four key modes of learning — observational, information-based, project-based, and spontaneous — mapped across the floor plan so students can move fluidly between different kinds of learning experiences based on their needs, interests, and the teaching approach.
Despite the compact footprint and high student density, the floor offers a richly varied environment through terraces, open commons, small-group rooms, project studios, and flexible gathering spaces, with outdoor terraces extending learning outdoors for play, science and weather observation, art, storytelling, movement, and informal social time. By maximizing 100% of the available floor area through flexible planning, adaptive furniture, transparency, and collaborative teaching, the project shows how highly agile environments can support individualized, interdisciplinary, inquiry-driven learning even within extremely restrictive urban conditions.
