Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology
A science and technology research institute in Thailand's Wang Chan Valley — designed as an open ecosystem for research, collaboration, and discovery.
A research environment for discovery — at the scale of a small science city.

A research campus designed as an ecosystem for discovery.
Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) occupies a 345-acre campus within Thailand’s innovation-focused Wang Chan Valley in Rayong, with roughly 50,000 square meters of research and learning environments. Education Design International provided STEM educational planning, campus planning, and learning-environment design studies — investigating how architecture, landscape, and academic planning could work together to create a dynamic ecosystem focused on research, entrepreneurship, and global scientific collaboration.
The research and learning vision centered on breaking down barriers between disciplines — creating highly flexible, interconnected environments that encourage collaboration among scientists, researchers, faculty, entrepreneurs, and students. Rather than isolated departmental facilities, the campus emphasizes open innovation environments: shared laboratories, interdisciplinary research hubs, collaborative commons, makerspaces, engineering workshops, presentation forums, startup incubators, and social learning spaces designed to foster creativity, experimentation, and knowledge exchange.
A major focus involved strengthening the relationship between advanced research and the natural environment. Set within the Wang Chan Valley, the campus emphasizes strong indoor–outdoor connections, shaded courtyards, ecological landscapes, and wellness-focused circulation paths that support both scientific inquiry and human wellbeing.
