Tianjin Experimental School
A K-12 campus reimagined as an interconnected, student-centered village — designed around Small Learning Communities, signature learning stairs, and biophilic principles that replace "cells and bells" with fluid spaces for inquiry and collaboration.
A student-centered village — designed at a human scale.

A campus reimagined as an interconnected, student-centered village.
Tianjin Experimental School is Education Design International’s deliberate move away from the rigid, corridor-based schooling traditions of Northern China. Spread across a 7.2-hectare site with 30,000 square meters of purpose-built facilities for roughly 1,000 K-12 students, the campus is organized as a network of Small Learning Communities — clusters of flexible, multi-zoned classrooms knit together by communal hubs rather than long corridors.
At the heart of the interior is EDI’s signature learning stair — an intentionally oversized, terraced circulation route that doubles as informal social space, independent study alcove, and spontaneous presentation stage. Grounded in biophilic principles, open atriums, generous daylight, and natural materials extend the sense of indoor-outdoor connection. Acoustic moveable partitions and agile furniture replace the “cells and bells” model, letting teachers shift seamlessly between quiet study, collaborative workshop, and project-based work.
Architecturally, the campus reads as a continuous pedagogical journey — vibrant, playful spaces for the youngest learners gradually giving way to deeper tones and more structured environments for secondary students. The result is a future-forward master plan that sets a progressive benchmark for modern educational design in China.
