The Project

A welcoming heart for students, families, and neighborhood.

The Perea Innovation & Learning Center anchors the Schools of Perea master plan in the historic North Memphis community — a transformation of the existing PreK-8 campus into a welcoming, learner-centered environment for 819 students across 87,300 square feet. EDI led the Visioning, Master Plan, and Concept Design, aligning the physical environment with the school’s mission of empowering students and families through innovation, empathy, resilience, and strong community relationships.

A central focus was transforming existing facilities into flexible, multi-age Learning Communities that support personalized learning, project-based instruction, and stronger student agency. The plan integrates flexible learning commons, breakout environments, makerspaces, innovation centers, science labs, therapy rooms, and parent lounges — ‘meeting students where they are’ by weaving social-emotional learning and family resources directly into the design.

Community and nature ground the vision. Welcoming entries, family gathering spaces, and shared community facilities strengthen ties to North Memphis, while the campus grounds support gardens, outdoor learning spaces, and play. Pathfinder concepts — a redesigned welcoming entry and Early Years environments — set a phased path for long-term transformation, creating a campus where belonging, community partnership, and authentic learning support every student and family.
