North Tampa Christian Academy — Early Childhood Center
In Tampa, a building for North Tampa Christian Academy's youngest learners, from infants through pre-kindergarten — where nature-immersed learning spaces, a forest library, and covered porches open each day to exploration, choice, and the Florida outdoors.
A first school, built around nature and exploration.

A building shaped around how young children explore.
The Early Childhood Education Center is the home for North Tampa Christian Academy’s youngest learners, from infants through pre-kindergarten. Education Design International led visioning, programming, and concept and schematic design for the 15,000-square-foot building, planned for 250 children on a 1.5-acre site in Tampa, Florida.
The design takes its cues from the Florida landscape. Low buildings open onto lawns and gardens through covered timber porches, so the day moves easily between inside and out. Within, the early-childhood environments are immersive and nature-rich: a forest library tucked beneath a canopy of timber leaves, a sensory room with water and tactile walls, a teaching kitchen for practical-life learning, and terraced nooks for gathering and storytelling. Each space is scaled to a small child and arranged to invite exploration, choice, and discovery.
Rooted in the school’s community-centered, faith-based mission, the center supports an Explorers approach to early learning, where young children grow by exploring, choosing, creating, and solving. As one part of North Tampa’s larger natural campus, the building gives the school’s youngest children a place of their own, connected to nature, to community, and to one another from their very first years.
