Kai Early Years
Not a building for early childhood — an experience. Sensory gardens, curvilinear paths, and exploratory zones knit indoor and outdoor learning into a single continuous environment.

Not a building for early childhood — an experience.
Kai Early Years, designed by Education Design International, is not just a building for early childhood education — it is an experience. Curvilinear patterns guide the child to the school building through a sequence of encounters: a sound and sensory garden, climbing structures and mounds, and a herb and kitchen garden. Indigenous flowering plants and fruit trees lining the compound wall introduce a seasonal rhythm of color and form, becoming an integral part of the outdoor learning experience.
A sensory walkway of varied patterns and textures stimulates the child’s senses, supporting early brain development. The community center and the early childhood center are organized around a central open play area covered by membrane roofing so it remains usable year-round. Entries to the two buildings are kept independent and distinct, addressing security, safety, and functional requirements without compromising the openness of the shared landscape.
The design team was deliberate in providing both indoor and outdoor spaces for exploration and play. Inside, learning zones are organized by purpose — manipulative, cognitive, reading, story-telling — and an outdoor learning deck extends the classroom directly into the landscape, making it second nature for teachers and children to move between the two. Active play includes a multi-play structure, climbing hex, balancing beam, stepping pods and rock-climbing wall, spinners, climbers, a water-play structure, and an athletic track — alongside loose, assembleable elements that let children invent play structures of their own.
