Headstart School — Pre-K–12 in Karachi, Pakistan designed by Education Design International.
The Project

A school designed to inspire curiosity through hands-on learning.

Headstart School was envisioned as a future-focused learning environment where students learn by doing. Moving away from traditional models of rote learning, the campus was designed to support project-based learning, student agency, and collaboration through a rich variety of flexible learning environments. Every space encourages exploration, creativity, and meaningful engagement, empowering learners to take ownership of their educational journey.

EDI developed a master plan that organises the school into smaller learning communities, creating a more connected and personalised experience for students across every stage of learning. Planned across two phases on a compact 1.02-acre site, the campus is centred around a landscaped courtyard that links the Primary and Secondary School buildings while encouraging interaction, collaboration, and a strong sense of community.

The design maximises every available square foot to create an active and engaging campus. Rooftops are transformed into outdoor learning and recreation spaces, including sports facilities and community gardens, extending learning beyond the classroom. Responding to Karachi’s hot and humid climate, the building incorporates a contemporary screened façade that reduces heat gain while enhancing environmental performance. Together, these strategies create a sustainable, adaptable, and learner-centred campus that reflects Headstart School’s vision of preparing confident, independent, and lifelong learners.
