Fisher STEAM Middle School
The MacConnell Award-winning Fisher School serves as a premier living laboratory where students engage in high-impact, project-based learning in a facility designed to mirror the collaborative spirit of modern, interdisciplinary work.
A living laboratory for project-based inquiry — built around learning communities.

Putting the STEAM into STEM.
Fisher STEAM Middle School was built as a new 750-student Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics campus in Greenville, South Carolina. Education Design International, in collaboration with Pazdan Smith, served as Master Planner and Architectural Designer — shaping a school in which the entire building and its surrounding landscape serve as a laboratory for student inquiry.
The campus is organized around the learning community model, with interdisciplinary academic clusters that create direct connections between learning spaces. Teachers plan together and students execute complex projects together — from designing, programming, and assembling robots to observing and experimenting with botanical elements on site. Each cluster includes a gallery for finished student work and prototypes in progress.
Assembly spaces throughout the building host industry and academic partners — including Clemson University, BMW, and Goodyear — bringing real-world problems and mentors directly into the school. Fisher STEAM was recognized with the MacConnell Award, the highest international honor in educational facility design.
