The Project

Corridors replaced by grade-level learning communities.

The Beijing National Day School-Chaoyang Middle School was envisioned as a highly innovative and future-focused secondary learning environment designed to support inquiry, collaboration, personalization, and “Mastery Through Practice” in preparation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Developed in collaboration with Principal Li Xigui and the BNDS leadership team, the project explored how contemporary educational environments could fundamentally transform the traditional middle school experience through flexible learning communities and student-centered educational models.

The campus organization replaces conventional classroom corridors with highly collaborative Learning Communities where each grade level occupies an entire floor organized around shared learning commons, project labs, group rooms, learning studios, specialty departments, teacher collaboration areas, and flexible instructional environments. Students are organized into three learning communities per grade, allowing for greater personalization, interdisciplinary learning, dynamic student grouping, and more meaningful relationships between students and faculty.

A major focus of the design centered on creating a highly active and engaging educational ecosystem that supports project-based learning, inquiry-driven exploration, social-emotional development, and authentic student experiences. Shared campus resources include visual and performing arts departments, science and mathematics centers, technology education environments, theaters, indoor athletics, cafés, exhibition spaces, learning commons, and collaborative gathering areas that promote creativity, teamwork, and student agency throughout the day.

The site and architectural planning carefully integrate indoor-outdoor connections, sustainability strategies, collaborative social environments, and flexible academic spaces that can evolve alongside changing educational models in the future. Designed as both a landmark educational destination and a prototype for next-generation learning environments in China, the Chaoyang Middle School establishes a bold vision for inquiry-based and human-centered middle school education rooted in flexibility, innovation, and community.
