Chaoyang Elementary School
A next-generation “School of the Future” for Beijing National Day School, where eighteen learning communities replace the isolated classroom and two grades share each flexible, human-centered level.
An elementary campus built on shared learning communities.

The isolated classroom, replaced by learning communities for two grades.
The Beijing National Day School-Chaoyang Primary School was envisioned as a next-generation “School of the Future” designed to redefine the elementary student experience through highly innovative learning communities, flexible educational environments, and student-centered pedagogical models. Developed in collaboration with BNDS and Principal Li Xigui, the project explored how primary education could evolve to better prepare students for the rapidly changing demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Education 4.0.
The design replaces the traditional isolated classroom model with a highly collaborative Learning Community framework where two grades share an entire level organized around flexible learning spaces, teacher collaboration environments, specialty labs, gathering stairs, remote libraries, cafés, and social learning hubs. Students are organized into eighteen learning communities across grades 1-6, creating a more personalized, inquiry-driven, and relationship-centered educational experience that encourages collaboration, creativity, student agency, and interdisciplinary learning.
A major emphasis of the project focused on creating highly varied and human-centered learning environments that support multiple intelligences, learning modalities, and opportunities for both structured and informal education. Flexible academic spaces, hands-on learning environments, active indoor-outdoor connections, visual arts and fine arts departments, athletics, theaters, collaborative commons, and social gathering areas were carefully integrated throughout the campus to foster curiosity, exploration, movement, and authentic project-based learning experiences.
The site and architectural design were carefully organized to create a landmark campus experience while maintaining strong relationships between architecture, landscape, and outdoor learning environments. The campus zoning strategy integrates academic, athletics, exploration, public, and outdoor play zones into a cohesive and highly walkable educational ecosystem that encourages interaction, wellbeing, and active learning throughout the day. Designed as both a flagship school and a replicable prototype for future education in China, the Chaoyang Primary School establishes a bold and future-ready vision for elementary learning environments centered around flexibility, collaboration, and innovation.
