Beijing Navigation School
This one-million-square-foot campus is the first of its kind in China. It is designed around student-centered learning and features some of the most extensive amenities found anywhere in the world.
A working environment for learners — at the scale of a small district.

A campus designed as a working environment for learners.
Beijing Navigation School sits on a 7.6-hectare site on the eastern edge of Beijing and accommodates 2,880 students with a faculty and staff of more than 300. Education Design International served as Visioning, Master Planning, and Design Architect, Interior Designer, and Educational Planner — guiding the project from its earliest pedagogical conversations through the design of every learning studio, commons, and specialist space on the 96,000-square-meter campus.
The brief was unusually ambitious. The school’s founders set out to build a campus that could embody an active, student-centered learning model — one in which inquiry, hands-on practice, and interdisciplinary work are not occasional enrichments but the daily organizing principle. The result is a campus designed as a working environment for learners, with the architecture itself acting as a participant in education rather than a backdrop to it.
Opened in late 2022, Beijing Navigation School is intended to serve as a flagship model of forward-looking education in China.
