American School of Bombay — Secondary School
The American School of Bombay's main campus in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, transformed — corridors and classrooms replaced by learning studios and open commons across a nine-strategy renovation.
A main campus, reworked into a modern secondary school.

Corridors and enclosed rooms, replaced by studios and commons.
As part of a global master plan to expand the American School of Bombay, the school’s Lower School was relocated to a new tower in Kurla, freeing the existing main campus in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex to be reworked into an expanded Middle and High School. In 2011 ASB enrolled 782 students from kindergarten through grade 12, with an IB programme in the upper grades; EDI served as Master Planner and Design Architect, with SSA of Mumbai as Executive Architect.
Over an intensive 45-day period, and shaped by workshops with administrators, teachers, parents, students, and the wider community, a schematic design emerged around a set of renovation strategies. Corridors and classrooms gave way to learning studios and open commons; single-loaded balconies were glazed in and turned toward the classrooms to create sunlit learning commons; and the old library became a modern Global Learning Center.
Further moves transformed a former backstage area into a wellness center, reconfigured floors into learning communities supporting social-emotional learning and multiple learning modalities, and created a performing-arts center and a science learning community. A rooftop daylighting strategy added learning space where the building had lacked natural light, completing the campus’s shift from a conventional school into a connected, student-centered secondary environment.
