Al Batinah International School
A K-12 “learning village” in Sohar, Oman — an existing campus expanded for 1,100 Omani and expatriate students, planned as one ecologically sustainable landscape rather than a cluster of separate buildings.
A small campus, grown into a learning village.

An ecologically sustainable learning village.
Al Batinah International School grew a small K-12 campus in Sohar into a school for 1,100 Omani and expatriate students. EDI led the master plan and architectural design, working from a single organising idea: rather than a cluster of separate buildings, the campus would be one ecologically sustainable “learning village” — an interconnected landscape in which every space, indoor and outdoor, plays a part in learning.
The plan keeps students close to both the built and the natural environment, using the campus itself to build environmental awareness while opening up room for collaboration and exploration. Every teaching space was designed to support more than one way of learning and to adapt as the school’s programme changes; as a 1:1 technology-enabled campus, it lets students move easily between independent study, group work, project-based activity, and informal learning.
Spaces can be reconfigured across year groups, so the campus keeps pace with the curriculum rather than fixing it in place. Completed in 2014, Al Batinah pairs flexible planning with environmental responsibility and technology-rich rooms — architecture meant to support the way the school actually teaches.
