Aga Khan International School
A K–12 campus in Nairobi designed to reach both Net Zero Carbon and Net Zero Water — an existing high school adapted as the Primary School, joined by new Nursery and Secondary buildings planned around daylight, natural ventilation, and green space.
A campus designed to reach Net Zero Carbon and Net Zero Water.

A Net Zero campus that redefines sustainable learning.
The Aga Khan International School in Nairobi was envisioned as a future-ready K–12 campus that demonstrates how sustainability and education can work together to create an inspiring learning environment. Designed to achieve both Net Zero Carbon and Net Zero Water, the campus establishes a new benchmark for environmentally responsible educational design while supporting student wellbeing, collaboration, and holistic development.
EDI developed the educational planning, master plan, and architectural design to maximise daylight, natural ventilation, and thermal comfort across every learning community. The design strategy also included the adaptive reuse of an existing high school building as the Primary School, complemented by two new purpose-built facilities for the Nursery and Secondary School, creating a cohesive campus that balances innovation with resource efficiency.
The campus integrates abundant green spaces with contemporary learning environments to encourage exploration, environmental stewardship, and a strong connection to nature. By combining sustainable design principles with flexible, student-centred spaces, the project creates a resilient learning ecosystem that not only supports academic excellence but also serves as a regional exemplar for future educational campuses.
